Guanacaste Costa Rica Nicoya Peninsula
Guanacaste includes most of the Nicoya Peninsula.
The Nicoya Peninsula is a large portion of land that is divided and separated from mainland Costa Rica in most of this area by the Tempisque River and also the Gulf of Nicoya.
The Nicoya Peninsula is an important geographic and political area. It includes the most beautiful beaches of the entire province of Guanacaste.
The southern part of Nicoya can be accessed by ferry from the city of Puntarenas, the middle part can be reached driving, since there now is a new bridge crossing the mighty Tempisque River.
The northern part can be reached by car or plane. Tourists can rive through Liberia from anywhere in the country, and by plane landing in the new airport.
Nicoya has some larger towns and cities. The most important is Nicoya, Santa Cruz, Carmona or Nandayure, Hojancha.
The Nicoya Peninsula is also the cradle for Guanacaste`s culture and traditions, indigenous history and of course the very important tourism and travel industry.
Some people refer to Guanacaste as Nicoya, because most of the lowlands are in Nicoya, but Guanacaste is much more than just the Nicoya Peninsula.
